My mother (z”l) had a favorite saying: “It is never too late to be the person you were meant to be!”
It’s depressing how easily we slip into the “missed opportunity” frame of mind. As if time really is governed by entropy. As if we have no other recourse…. But we have a tradition that teshuvah (primeval return to our source) is one of the things created “prior to the Six Days of Creation”, that is, something that is outside the normal world of space and time, and thus outside of causality.
Perhaps this should be the motto of this season: it is never too late! There is always that option of stepping outside of time, of finding the one thread that needs to be pulled to change our course. We have an innate ability to bend time to our will. If ever there was a season to prove it, it is now!
